Day 14 - A lake called Wanda

Evolution Lake

Evolution Valley to Wanda Lake. 11434ft elevation.

Today we traveled: 9.5miles.      2500ft elevation gain    367ft elevation loss.

JMT mile marker: 126.4mile.

Today started slow. We woke up and discovered that most of our things got wet during the night but it never rained. We waited for the sun to poke through the mountain and we spread out everything on the rocks to dry. Bob calls this: Garage Sale. We drank our coffee then some tea and waited till we warmed up enough to start hiking.

Last night a group of 3 men, a dad and his two sons, camped next to us. They entertained us thru the morning with their garage sale. We couldn’t believe how much time it took them to get organized. I mean we had a reason - we were sick.

Garage Sale

Bob recovered some but we decide to take today easy and see how he felt.

Most of the day was an uphill charge with some steep sections. We passed a ranger cabin and had a little chat with him. He stays there from June to September and gets his supply delivered to him at the begging of the season and that’s it. Wow. Not sure if I would like to do that job. Even though people constantly passing by it seems so remote.

He gave us some good tips about the hike ahead and we moved on. Oh, not before we had a conversation about how to choose the right stick to clean your bum instead of toilet paper. He even showed me a few that can work. I don’t know. I’m not too convinced but we are running low on TP that we might need to give it a try.

Back when we were at MTR we made several mistakes. First - I gave away our Advil supply thinking we have a bunch which we don’t. Second - We didn’t pick up toilet paper and even though I thought I mailed us a bunch of compressed compostable paper we seem to run out of them. Three - we didn’t get rid of our empty can of fuel and now need to carry it with us as dead weight. Yep. Well, you live and you learn. Is our marriage going to survive the big TP shortage?! I guess we’ll learn in a few days.

Today’s hike was stunning. Magnificent. So so pretty. We climbed out of the valley into the mountain and saw 4 deferent lake starting with Evolution Lake. So blue and clear and big - it took us more than a mile to pass it, that’s a lot around here. We kept climbing up to 11,400ft where we are camped for the night at Wanda Lake - another incredible lake. It’s a bit windy and after dinner and tea we got into the tent just in time when the sun set behind the mountain and the temperature dropped. Bob is still congested and we are ready to turn in for the night. Tomorrow is Muir pass   Can’t wait! Yifat.
