Day 13 - Into the Canyon we go

Kings Canyon National Park - South Fork of the San Joaquin

MTR to Evolution Valley. 9474ft elevation.

Today we traveled: 9.75miles 2018ft elevation gain 367ft elevation loss.

JMT mile marker: 117mile.

We started the day with high energy after eating our big crackers with peanut butter and strawberry jam. Last night in an effort to get all our food into our bear vault I shoved them in and pushed the lid down. It was very surprising this morning to see they have survived and we decided we should eat them with our coffee, another trick to get food tucked away and secure is by eating it!!  Keeping with that thought in mind I upgraded our breakfast from granola to super granola. It’s double the portion and same great flavor. If Bob can have his Super Ramen then I can have super granola. We both agreed it was a winner move.

We entered Kings Canyon National Park and walked most of the day by a creek deep into the canyon. It was so beautiful.

I thought that today was supposed to be easy since we have a full pack we planed for shorter miles then our usual 12+ so you can imagine my surprise when we got to the bottoms of the switchbacks and looked up. Oh here we climb again.

When we reached the top we could look back and see all the water flowing through the canyon we climb. After a while we reached Evolution Creek, near the meadow, and had to cross it.  We switched shoes to sandals and in we went. It’s late in the season so instead of being the hard crossing that terror lots of hikers, it was a gentle stream of no more than mid shin high.

Safety first

Evolution Creek Crossing

The day was hot and we looked for a campsite near water, once we couldn’t find water source I switch tactic to finding campsite and then looking for water. We found one with a hidden stream right behind it. The trail provides once again.

Bob hasn’t been feeling good since the morning. He is complaining of stuffy nose and throat. He’s been coughing. Once we set camp at 3pm, we ate lunch, and he took a nap. I’m a bit worried but he woke up after an hour feeling better. He took some Advil and it seems to do the trick.

Hopefully tomorrow he feels better. Yifat
